While it may not be incredibly common for a new business, there will be times when you need to go on the road for work. Depending on the reason, you may need to take a variety of equipment with you. This is no small endeavor, and you need to make sure that everything makes it there in one piece. So what do you need to keep in mind and what gear do you need?
Why are You Going?
The reason you’re traveling will influence many of your decisions, including who is going with you and what you need to bring. You may be headed to a trade show to market some of your products, a recruiting fair to find new employees, or a conference to build skills or network. Whatever your reason for traveling, you need to be clear about your purpose so you can be as efficient as possible and conserve time and resources.
Who is Going?
Once you know where you are going and why, you can determine who to send. Obviously, if the purpose of a trip overlaps with someone’s job responsibility, they should be going. For instance, if you are looking for new employees, you should send your recruiter. If your company is small you may be limited to sending just a few people. Choose your most personable people to represent your company and help you build your brand.
How are You Getting There?
The mode of transportation that you choose will depend on how far away you are and what you have to take with you. If you are only a few hours away or you are taking a large amount of equipment, it is probably a good idea to drive. This will save on luggage costs and allow you some more flexibility in setting your own schedule. If you are flying and you have electronics, make sure you have the proper cases for them. Most cases can be built to order, and it will keep your screens from cracking and being damaged when being thrown around by the baggage handlers.
What are You Taking with You?
No matter where you are going, you should have at least a small supply of your product on hand. You never know when you will have a sales opportunity, and you need to be ready to take advantage. If you are making a presentation at a conference, talk to the organizer about what equipment is available for you. If you are going to a trade show or a recruiting fair, it is pretty safe to assume that you will need to bring all of your own electronic equipment. You will probably need some kind of screen to display graphics and information on and other promotional materials.
